Welcome to the knowledge base of the project on “AI-assisted Grading of Open-ended Exam Questions” at the DF Teaching Center. This knowledge base contains comprehensive documentation of our research, development process, and resources for implementing AI-assisted grading in your own context. The knowledge base is an auxiliary resource to the project website at DF - AI-assisted Grading.
Why AI-assisted Grading?
Open-ended questions in exams are vital for assessing students’ knowledge, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. Unlike multiple-choice questions, they require students to construct their own responses, providing a more nuanced evaluation of their understanding. However, grading these questions consistently poses significant challenges:
- Workload: For lecturers, especially in large classes, the time investment is substantial
- Consistency: Human graders can be influenced by biases and mental fatigue
- Fairness: Ensuring procedural fairness and consistent evaluation across all submissions
- Efficiency: Managing the grading process while maintaining high quality standards
Our Approach
We’ve developed a comprehensive framework for AI-assisted grading that:
- Augments, Not Replaces: Our solution is designed to support human graders, not replace them
- Ensures Fairness: Implements structured workflows and rubrics for consistent evaluation
- Improves Efficiency: Reduces grading workload while maintaining quality
- Maintains Control: Keeps human oversight throughout the grading process
Knowledge Base Structure
This knowledge base is organized into several key sections:
