Grouping combines similar student responses to enable batch grading, reducing workload and improving grading consistency. This can be done either manually or through automated analysis. Key benefits include:

  • Faster grading through batch evaluation of similar answers
  • More consistent scoring across similar responses
  • Easier identification of common understanding patterns
  • Better standardization of feedback for similar answers
  • Reduced cognitive load on graders

According to an analysis of three exams in our department, grouping could benefit approximately one-third of exam questions. The approach can be implemented through Automated Grouping or manual organization by graders.
